When Delhi meets Bombay!!!

When Delhi Meets Bombay!!!!

The great delhi -bombay divide is something we all have heard of...bombayiites would always say - delhi is so rustic but would gush about wide roads, food, clothes and ofcourse delhi women. On the other hand, delhiites would always say bombay is too suffocating, poor quality of life blah blah blah...but would rave about the night life of B. Like a european friend of mine (who was in delhi for an exchange program) once put it - delhi is like my rural hometown and bombay is
the city. Though being a delhi born-brought-up variety (all through my life), such observations about delhi don't really bother me but somewhere i do understand the sentiment...that subtle or should i say, the overt difference which became too apparent last night while I was visiting a friend of mine in bombay.

My friend N had their newly moved-in-neighbors over at her place...two guys - one delhiite P and the other from some part of west India...however, the evening started well with all of us sitting and chatting...P was apparently doing some sort of work with a big shot bollywood director and was flaunting his bollywood links, parties, and his newly acquired knowledge of world cinema...okay very well...considering both N and her husband D and myself love movies, we went on discussing the movies and were having a really good time...

But as the evening progressed...P got high and high and started to lambast delhi (inspite of being a delhiite), he would go on and on about how people are so crass...and how most of delhi pubs have all wannabees hanging around...and how women in delhi would throw themselves on him because of his bollywood connection...

And then...after a while at around two am, we all decided to go out and pick some rastaa food to eat...P insisted on taking his car claiming that he has world's best music collection and we must check that out in his car...me and N were feeling nice and happy and didn't really bother about the car and the music but D (a proper south bombay and a teetotaller) looked ill at ease, refused to go but eventually gave in.

As we sat in the car, the world's best music collector played nusrat fateh ali khan's -
aafreen aafreen...on a volume that after my school days (when all these guys in 8th - 9th standard used to play music on a high volume to impress girls) i have never heard in the car. And then I saw somethin which I have never seen before in entire three decades of my life...not jus he would put music on the high volume...he would simply leave the steering wheel and start moving his body to the music while driving the car which was speedin at 110 kmph....P announced with a lot of pride that he loves to party on the road and dance on the wheel...and let me tell you - apart from moving his legs (though i cant be sure as i was on the backseat), his entire body - head, hands, shoulders everything jerked, shaked, jumped, gyrated...both me and N were just amused looking at him and then we suddenly caught the expressions on D's face who looked as if he was shown a cheap horror movie - disgusted and shocked...post that both me and N would keep looking at P & D and would non-stop laugh and say "this is what happens when Delhi meets Bombay!!!"

and everytime i remind myself of that scene from Shakti, where Dilipsaab shows '9' written on his palm to Mr. Bachchan....who says it's '6' for him.
